Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)

Ubuntu Logo

Today mark another milestone for Canonical’s Linux distribution, Ubuntu, with its’ ninth release dubbed as “Intrepid Ibex” or if you prefer the number, just Ubuntu 8.10 is suffice. You can read about the release note here. Among the changes are:

  • Comes with the Linux 2.6.27 kernel, X Server 1.5 / X.Org 7.4, Pidgin 2.5, and GIMP 2.6 (among many other packages).
  • Native 3G support.
  • Refined default theme.
  • Dynamic Kernel Module Support (some reading here).
  • Comes with a special ATI driver for providing the X.Org 7.4 support.
  • Inclusion of Live USB Disk Creator.
  • Refined BulletProffX.

If you’re not into Ubuntu yet, you can download it from Ubuntu’s site. If you’re upgrading, a simple guide can be found here (check your release version first). Currently I’m using the network upgrade method since I already have version 8.04.1. But since my local broadband connection kinda sucks  , it seems the upgrade process will took 2 years to complete  But for those who’re not in the rush, you can always request a free cd through Shipit.

Logitech MX518 & Hardy Heron

Currently, I’m using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) as my 2′nd OS. It had been a while that I stick with Ubuntu since my first venture with it on the 5.04 release. And by far, I can say that each releases, promise an enhancement (be it major or not). My previous Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) had been solid for me even up to the point that I feel kinda reluctant to upgrade it (but I do it anyway). When the Hardy is up, not facing any major problem but when I’m browsing the net (using Firefox 3 beta), it seems my Logitech MX518 can’t work properly; I can’t use my back & forward button. At first I thought it was the upgrade causing my Xorg configuration been reverted to the default one, but when I checked it, no…nothing changed; all my previous settings still intact in it.

Waiting List

In this nearest time, there are a couple of things that I’ve been waiting anxiously or maybe just eagerly. Sort of like waiting for my first child to be born. Ahahahahha…okay, that’s kind of excessive, sorry for that. Without further ado, I present to you the list itself:

  • Waiting for my interview appointment.

I’ve already applying for some positions by sending my CV to the appropriate parties and already learn my lesson from 2 years ago (didn’t have the patient to wait for a reply); I’m now waiting with more patient than ever. At the same time, I do realize opportunities wait for no one, so I’m not taking anything for granted; I’m still finding another possible job opportunities without too reliant on the already made applications.

My Current Status…(III)

It had been a very busy month for me. Maybe because in a few weeks from now, I’ll finish (graduate) my post-graduate studies. At time like this, it seems I’m much busier than a prime minister. Had to finish writing and checking my thesis, preparing for thesis defense, making presentation slides, and all at the same time maintaining my cluttered life (it’s kinda hard really…to manage so many things in one go). Due to that, I missed so many things/events happened around me; most notably many of my friends birthday (forgot to wish at the exact time; I really dislike to use ‘belated’ :-P ), meeting/hanging with my friends during Eid, watching new movies at cinema, and spending most of my holiday with my parents. Aih…I do hope this pattern will end soon though… Read More

Fedora Core 5

Fedora Core 5 Bordeaux

It’s almost two weeks now since I change my Linux OS distro into Fedora Core 5 (FC5). I must admit that the journey to explore the Linux world is far from easy or over. Before this, I’ve manage to put my hands on the Ubuntu 5.10. I must say that the experience for noobies like me is very pleasent in some way. But for some reason, I switch to FC5, mainly because of the more large support on FC distro (community forums, guide, rpm, etc). I never really care about FC actually because before this when I want to jump on the Linux bandwagon, one of the distro that I tried were Fedora Core 2 & the experience is not as pleasent as I thought (don’t flame me because of my statement here…remember, I’m a noobie).
